LUMBAR PUNCTURES

Any infant suspected of having sepsis who will be treated with antibiotics should receive a lumbar puncture. This includes infants who are admitted with fever, a history of prolonged rupture of maternal membranes, or maternal fever (if the infant is to be treated with antibiotics). However, infants who have a primary diagnosis of respiratory distress or infants who might be compromised by the procedure should not a lumbar puncture. Any questions regarding the appropriateness of a lumbar puncture should be discussed with the attending neonatologist or fellow.

Parents should be informed prior to attempting a lumbar puncture. No more than two attempts should be made without consultation with attending neonatologist or fellow.
