Lifesource (the company that coordinates organ donation) does not desire that we ask families to donate infants' eyes if they are less that 2 years of age. If the family initiates a request, the Lifesource Hotline should be contacted - 291-4654. The coordinator on-call will come and evaluate the infant to determine if donation can be done. In these cases, the eyes would be used for research only.
Heart valves of infants who are at least 36 weeks gestation and 10 lbs. can be used. In some cases this is possible even if the infant was septic at the time of death. Heart valves can be stored for months before use. The Lifesource Hotline would help coordinate this through Red Cross (same number as above).
