Gopher Kids Study

The Gopher Kids Study was launched at the 2010 Minnesota State Fair. Our goal was to enroll 500 children over six days. Due to the overwhelming response, we enrolled 841 children from 534 families!

We will not be enrolling new children into the study at the 2012 Minnesota State Fair. We have asked the families from the 2010 study to return so that we can obtain new measurements to see how the children have grown in the past year. You can find us in the University of Minnesota building on Dan Patch Avenue.

WHAT DOES THE GOPHER KIDS STUDY INVOLVE?

At the 2010 Fair, we asked families the following:

  • Have your child’s height, weight, waist, and blood pressure measured.
  • Donate a sample of your and your child’s DNA by using a “spit kit”.
  • Collect nail clippings (This is optional).
  • Collect blood spots by a fingerstick from your child (This is optional).
  • Complete a short, general survey about your family.

In February 2011, we mailed questionnaires to the participating families asking questions about diet, physical and leisure activities, and sleep habits. At the 2011 Fair we asked the families to come back so we could see how the children had grown.

We are asking participating families to return to the 2012 Fair to obtain new measurements to see how the Gopher Kids Study children have grown in the past year. Here’s what we ask at the 2012 Fair:

  • Have your child’s height, weight, and waist measured.
  • Collect nail clippings (This is optional).
  • Collect blood spots by a fingerstick from your child (This is optional).
  • Have a 3D facial photograph taken of your child (This is optional).

  • Were between the ages of 1-11 at the 2010 Minnesota State Fair
