The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Minnesota Medical School has a proud tradition of meeting the health care needs of children in the state and the nation since its inception in 1915. Numerous national pediatric leaders completed either their residency and/or fellowship in the Department, while almost two-thirds of the pediatricians practicing in Minnesota were trained in the residency program. Our residency provides the platform to obtain the skills to excel at each of the modern roles of the pediatrician including clinician, educator, consultant, family advocate and investigator of new knowledge.

The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Minnesota Medical School is committed to education and lifelong learning for our medical students, residents, fellows, and faculty. We have a large faculty representing all subspecialties, which bring a rich and diverse pediatric culture to the program, and who have been recruited from some of the best universities across the nation. The success of students, residents and fellows is among the highest priorities of the faculty.

One of the unique strengths of the residency program in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Minnesota is the diversity of clinical and academic training that is woven into the program. Residents entering the program have training opportunities in two different childrens hospitals (Children's Hospitals and Clinics with sites in St. Paul and Minneapolis and University of Minnesota Children's Hospital, a division of Fairview), and one county hospital (Hennepin County Medical Center) plus numerous outpatient clinics. Patient care experiences include inner city, new immigrants and refugees, suburban primary care, rural pediatrics as well as high technology tertiary and quaternary care. This city-wide cooperative educational effort and community involvement has earned the Pediatric Residency Program national recognition, and provides the resident with every aspect of training required for the successful 21st century pediatrician. The flexibility and diversity of this training program encourages each of the residents to pursue his/her own educational needs, interests and career goals.

The Residency Program also benefits from its close association with the Medical School at the University of Minnesota, which is among the top research intensive medical schools in the United States. This close proximity gives our training program an intellectually stimulating environment with exposure to the latest research and new therapies available for the treatment of children.

The Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul have consistently been ranked among the best cities in the United States. The Twin Cities offer a progressive, rapidly growing metropolitan area of almost 3 million with varied cultural experiences and superb recreational activities.
