Insurance/Costs

The MEDICAL VISITS differ from visits to your primary care provider (PCP) in that they are not preventive care or well-child visits. They are specialist visits. You may need to ask your insurance company what coverages they provide for adopted children (in some cases there are different diagnostic codes for adopted children than for U.S.-born children). Unlike well-child or preventive care visits, you may be responsible for one or more co-pays.

You will receive two-three separate billing statements from the medical visit. One is for provider services, one for OT/PT evaluation and one for facility services (which includes registration, nursing services, skin tests and outpatient lab tests). Please discuss this billing structure with your insurance provider so that you are aware of your financial responsibility for these visits. If you elect not to have your insurance provider billed for these appointments and to instead accept full responsibility for payment, your payment will be reduced by 10% if you pay cash at the time of your appointment. Please contact our financial counselor at 612-625-8921 for additional questions.

Following is a list of most of the payers with whom UMPhysicians and Fairview contract. This is only a partial list; please note that your plan may offer different levels of coverage. Please check with your insurance provider about co-pays, coverages and network limitations. It is your responsibility to check with your insurance company to make sure that visits to the Adoption Clinic are covered. America's PPO, Blue Cross Blue Shield of MN, Compcare Group Health of Eau Claire, Cooperative Great West, HealthPartners, IA Medical Assistance, Medica (some of the plans), Medicare, Metropolitan Health Plan, MN Medical Assistance, MMSI, Multi Plan, ND Medical Assistance, Patient Choice, Preferred One, Prime West Private Health Care Systems, SD Medical Assistance, Security Health Plan, Tricare, UCare, and WI Medical Assistance.

The PSYCHOLOGIST VISITS are mental health visits, billed as diagnostic testing. The services provided may be covered under the medical benefits or mental health benefits of your insurance plan, depending upon your child’s final diagnosis. Your insurance plan may have a different level of coverage for mental health benefits than for medical benefits. Therefore, a portion of the services may be your responsibility. Please contact the psychology financial counselor, 763-782-6548, to find out whether your insurance plan requires preauthorization. You will receive assistance from us in acquiring preauthorization if necessary. It is also recommended that you contact your insurance provider to find out what your benefit level is for mental health services.

NOTE: Clinic fees are entirely separate from any donations you may have given previously.

Primary care provider

We recommend you choose a primary care pediatrician/provider (PCP) before your child comes home. Your PCP will be captain of the health team, of which the Adoption Clinic will play a role as specialist consultants. Our clinic does not administer vaccinations or do routine well-child visits, and a 24-hr nurse triage is not available. While we are happy to be the first clinic that you bring your child to when she/he comes home, we recommend that you call your primary care when you arrive home, just to let them know you're all home, and you should take them to primary care if they develop fever, diarrhea, itchy skin (could be scabies), or are not drinking well or do not have a wet diaper every 4-6 hours.

Prior to clinic visit, please bring:

  1. Your child's translated international medical record/preadoption health history, if we did not do your preadoption medical review
  2. Results of medical tests, immunizations and examinations that have been done in the U.S. (It is recommended to upload all of this to our online submission system at least 1 week prior to the appointment date so your provider can review it in advance and spend as much time as possible with you and your child.) If you cannot use the online system, please fax to 612-625-2920 or email as a PDF to iac@umn.edu. You can also mail the records to us.

Bring to clinic visit:

  1. Completed Email Consent Form + HIPAA authorization form (sent to you from the Pediatric Call Center)
  2. Completed List of Medications + name of primary care provider (Call Center)
  3. Parent Questionnaire (if you did not do it online)
  4. List of questions to ask the adoption doctor
  5. Fresh stool specimen (click here for hints on stool specimen collection)

Interpreter services

If your child speaks a language other than English, please call 612-626-6777 to arrange for an interpreter if this was not done at the time your appointment was scheduled. We recommend an interpreter be present for appointments with any child 18 months or older.

Parents and siblings

For two-parent families and families with other siblings: we understand that circumstances do not always permit, but we feel that the best care for your child is possible when both parents can be present at the initial appointment, and if alternative care can be arranged for other siblings. We also ask that, for families who have adopted more than 1 child at once, that only 1 child is scheduled in clinic per day, unless you live more than 50 miles from clinic.

Request copy of medical record

Your adoption clinic visit will generate a comprehensive clinic letter reviewing everything that was done at your IAC visit. Copies will be mailed to you and to your regular pediatrician. Trequest the entire medical record, please complete the Release of Information Form and fax it to Fairview Health Information Management Services, 612-273-2345 (fax number also located on the form itself).

Research participation

As of June 2008, there are two opportunities to participate in research studies. Click here for more information.

Development program

A series of 3 visits that are recommended over the course of the first 2 years of your child’s life in the U.S.--2 appointments with our medical team at 2-3 weeks post-arrival and 6 months post-arrival, and then 1 visit with our child psychologist at 12 months post-arrival. However, we are happy to see any child of any age, regardless of how long they have been home. You are not required to participate in all 3 visits, but this is our recommendation based on more than 20 years of research with internationally adopted children.
