Department to have new home in freestanding U of M Children's Hospital

University of Minnesota Children's Hospital, Fairview Finds New Home

January 10, 2007 Fairview Health Services announced plans to construct a new home for the University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital. Pediatric care is currently separated throughout various floors on the University and Riverside campuses. This $175 million addition to the Riverside campus in Minneapolis will unify pediatric care and create an efficient and comfortable environment for patients and families.

University of Minnesota Sets Course For Cure of Fatal Childhood Skin Disease

Physicians at the University of Minnesota and University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital, Fairview have set the path to a cure for a young boy’s fatal genetic skin disease, recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB), by using a cord blood and bone marrow transplant.

We are pleased to announce that University of Minnesota Children's Hospital, Fairview has been named one of America's Best Children's Hospitals for Cancer care and Respiratory care by U.S News and World Report. The rankings are one more recognition of the value of the partnership between Fairview and the University of Minnesota. Congratulations to Dr. Warren Warwick for Winning a President's Award for Outstanding Service

The President's Award for Outstanding Service is presented each year in the spring and recognizes exceptional service to the University, its schools, colleges, departments, and service units by any active or retired faculty or staff member. Recipients of this award have gone well beyond their regular duties and have demonstrated an unusual commitment to the University community.

Norma K.C. Ramsay, MD Distinguished Visiting Professor Lectureship

Dr. Smita Bhatia will be speaking at the 3rd Annual Children's Cancer Research Fund; Norma K.C. Ramsay, MD Distinguished Visiting Professor Lectureship on September 10, 2008.  The title of the presentation is "The Quality of Survival after Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation".  It will be held at Pediatric Grand Rounds in Moos Tower 2-690 from 12:15 to 1:30pm.

WineFest 2008 - A Toast to Children's Health

We invite you to join members of the University community and the Twin Cities community for fun, food, and wine in support of the Department of Pediatrics. WineFest - A Toast to Children's Health is a two day celebration of the best in food and wine. The largest wine charity in the Midwest, takes place May 9 and 10 at the Depot in Minneapolis. Nickelodeon Universe Grand-Opening Party benefit for the University Pediatrics Foundation

The Mall of America's signature amusement park reopened with a new theme and a new name. Event proceeds from the grand-opening party benefited the University Pediatrics Foundation.

Dr. John Wagner recipient of the University of Minnesota McKnight Presidential Chair in Hematology and Oncology

In recognition of Dr. John Wagner’s outstanding work, he has been selected to receive the University of Minnesota McKnight Presidential Chair in Hematology and Oncology.  This award recognizes the critical importance of the University’s most distinguished faculty from across all disciplines, as well as the importance of strengthening our faculty for the future.  It also recognizes the scholarly achievements and the contributions made to advance the prominence of the University of Minnesota.  Dr. Wagner is currently the Division Director of the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/Blood and Marrow Transplant Program, Scientific Director, Center for Molecular and Cellular Therapeutics, Co-Director, Center for Translational Medicine.

Epidemiology and Clinical Research Faculty in the News

We are proud to announce that two of our faculty members from the Division of Epidemiology and Clinical Research have been quoted in the news.

Logan Spector, Ph.D., Medical School and Cancer Center, was quoted on the Fox 9 News website about research he will be conducting on the causes of osteosarcoma, a pediatric bone cancer.

Julie Ross, Ph.D., Medical School and Cancer Center, was quoted in Reuters Health about the association between childhood cancer and birthmarks. The article also appeared on the Scientific American website.

Meet Our New 2007-2008 Pediatric Interns

Dr. James Moller recipient of the Meritorious Achievement Award by the  American Heart Association’s Council on Cardiovascular Disease in the Young

Dr. James Moller has been selected to receive the Meritorious Achievement Award. The America Heart Association's Council on Cardiovascular Disease in the Young gives the Meritorious Achievement Award annually to an accomplished nominee who has made significant achievements toward the council mission through research, education and advocacy, with an emphasis on heart health in children and adults. This prestigious award commemorates Dr. Moller's significant impact in the field of cardiovascular disease in the young and for helping further the mission of the council.
